Why standing is worse
When you stand on 16, you need the dealer to bust. But with a 10 showing, the dealer busts only 23% of the time. The other 77%, they make 17 or better, and your 16 loses. When you hit, yes, you will bust often. But the times you draw a 2, 3, 4, or 5 and survive, you have a real chance of winning.
Surrender when available
If the casino offers surrender, this is one of the best hands to use it on. Surrendering 16 against a dealer 10 saves you half your bet instead of losing the full amount roughly 77% of the time. The expected loss from surrendering is exactly 50%. The expected loss from hitting is about 54%. The expected loss from standing is about 54% as well but slightly worse. Surrender is the best option when the table allows it.

Hard 16 vs dealer 10 comes up frequently. Over thousands of hands, the cumulative cost of playing it wrong adds up to real money. Fixing just this one hand will improve your long-term play more than fixing almost any other single decision. It is not glamorous, but it is high impact.
