Most people try to memorize the basic strategy chart cell by cell. That is the slowest possible approach. The chart is built on patterns, and once you see them, 80% of the decisions become obvious.
Day 1-2: Learn the hard totals
Start with hard totals 17 and above: always stand. Hard 11: always double. Hard 10: double against everything except dealer 10 or ace. Hard 9: double against dealer 3 through 6. These four rules alone cover a huge portion of hands.
For hard 12-16, remember one rule: stand against dealer 2-6 (the "bust cards"), hit against dealer 7 and up. The only exception is hard 12 against a dealer 2 or 3, where you hit.
Day 3-4: Soft totals
Soft hands follow a simple gradient. Soft 13-17: hit (or double when the dealer shows 5-6). Soft 18: stand against most, hit against 9/10/A. Soft 19-20: always stand. Think of it as a sliding scale - the higher your soft total, the less action you take.
Day 5-6: Splits
Three rules cover most splits. Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives. For everything else, split against dealer bust cards (2-6). The exceptions are few and learnable: split 2s/3s against 2-7, split 6s against 2-6, split 9s against 2-6 and 8-9.
Day 7: Drill and reinforce
By now you know the patterns. Day 7 is pure repetition. Use a trainer app that throws random hands at you and flags every mistake. After 200-300 hands of drilling, the decisions stop feeling like recall and start feeling like instinct. That is the goal.
