Most players sit down at a Las Vegas table and guess. A few hours of practice at home changes that. You will make the correct decision more often, play more calmly, and lose less. Here is a simple plan for the two weeks before your trip.
Week 1: Learn the rules and the basic strategy chart
Make sure you know every action: hit, stand, double down (double your bet and take exactly one more card), split (play a pair as two hands) and surrender (give up half your bet). Then learn basic strategy, the chart of the best move for every hand. Learn it in groups: hard hands first, then soft hands (hands with an ace counted as 11), then pairs. Our guide to memorizing the chart in one week has a day-by-day plan.
Week 2: Drill until the decisions are automatic
Knowing the chart and using it at a busy table are different things. Drill random hands every day for 15 to 20 minutes with a trainer that tells you at once when a move is wrong. Pay extra attention to the hands people get wrong most: 12 against a dealer 2 or 3, soft 18, 16 against a dealer 10, and pairs of 9s.
Learn to read the table rules
- Blackjack pays 3 to 2 or 6 to 5: a 3 to 2 table is much better for the player. Avoid 6 to 5 when you can
- Dealer stands or hits on soft 17: the sign on the table says which. Standing is slightly better for you
- Number of decks: fewer decks is slightly better, but the payout matters more
- Surrender allowed or not: if it is, learn the few hands where you use it
The day before you play
Do one short session of 100 random hands to refresh. Decide your budget before you go, and only play with money you are comfortable losing. Basic strategy lowers the house edge; it does not remove it, and no strategy guarantees winning.
Blackjack Guru is a free training app for iPhone and Android that drills basic strategy with instant feedback and repeats the hands you get wrong. It is a training tool only; no real money is involved.
